Most smart lock complaints come down to one thing: the door is not aligned, so the motor strains and the bolt stalls. We fit the lock, fix the door if it needs it, and set it up with you before we leave.
No more hiding a key under a planter. Give a cleaner or a dog walker a code that only works on Tuesdays, then delete it. Rent a room or a guest house and change the code between guests. Check from your phone whether you locked up after you left.
For a family, a keypad alone does most of this. App and Wi-Fi models add remote control and a log of who came in.
There are tradeoffs. Batteries need changing. Cheap models can be fussy in direct afternoon sun on a west-facing door. And a smart lock is still a deadbolt at heart, so it needs the same solid strike and frame as any other. We will tell you honestly if the model you picked is a poor match for your door.
A manual deadbolt can be forced into a misaligned strike with a firm turn of the wrist. A motor cannot. If the bolt rubs the strike, it stalls, the battery drains fast, and the lock reports jammed. So we check the door before mounting anything: hinges, gaps, strike position. A small adjustment here saves months of frustration.
We also check that your door thickness and backset suit the model you have. Not every smart lock fits every door.
Most smart locks keep a regular key cylinder for when the battery dies or the electronics fail. That cylinder ships with its own random key. We can rekey it to your house key so you are not carrying an extra one, or set it up as a separate emergency key if you prefer.
Before we leave, we program your first codes, pair the app if there is one, and show you how to change the batteries. We also lock and unlock it a dozen times with the door closed, so you know it runs clean.
If you have already bought a lock, tell us the brand and model. If not, tell us what you want it to do and we will suggest something that suits your door. Text (657) 478-8248 with your ZIP and a photo of the door edge and both sides of the current lock.
Most smart locks warn you for weeks before it gets that low. If it does die, you use the backup key, and some models also let you power them briefly from outside with a battery. We show you which applies to your lock.
Often, yes, especially retrofit models that replace only the inside part of the deadbolt. Check with your landlord first, since they usually need a way in. We can leave the original hardware with you to put back later.
Usually. It is most often door alignment or a bolt that rubs the strike. We adjust the door and strike so the bolt moves freely, then recalibrate the lock. Most models have a calibration step in the app that teaches the motor where the bolt stops, and it needs redoing after any adjustment.
Some keypad locks are made for outdoor gates and handle sun and weather better than door models. See our gate locks page, or text a photo of the gate and we will tell you what fits.
