Topanga is beautiful, and it is also a place where your phone drops a bar every turn of the road. If you can get one text out, send it to us with a photo of the lock, and we will work out the rest.
Topanga is a canyon community in the Santa Monica Mountains, unincorporated and proud of it, strung along Topanga Canyon Boulevard between the Valley and the Pacific Coast Highway. Side roads like Old Topanga, Fernwood and Entrado wind up the slopes to houses hidden in oaks and brush. Many homes were built by hand over decades: wooden cabins, studios with add-on rooms, places where the front door is the side door. There is no real grid and few street numbers you can see from the road. Morning fog drifts up from the coast, and the canyon has been evacuated for fire more than once.
Wood is everywhere here, and wood moves. Doors swell in damp winter months, so a deadbolt that worked fine in July will not throw in January. Coastal fog adds rust to cylinders and hinges on the ocean side of the canyon. We see a lot of older knob locks, mixed brands and hand-built doors that need a little extra fitting. Gates at the bottom of long driveways often carry padlocks or keyed latches exposed to the weather. When we change a lock here, we use hardware that holds up to the damp and adjust the strike so it works all year.
Topanga is about 10.8 miles from Van Nuys in a straight line, which is usually 25–45 minutes, though the canyon road can stretch it, especially at rush hour or after a closure. Text (657) 478-8248 your address, a landmark and a photo of the lock, and we send the price and an honest ETA.
Send everything in one text while you have a signal: address, nearest landmark, gate code and a photo of the lock. If you can, wait where you get a bar or two. We can also meet you at a known spot on Topanga Canyon Boulevard and follow you up.
Probably not. The wooden door or frame swells with the damp and the bolt no longer lines up with the hole in the strike. We adjust or move the strike and check the door fit, which often fixes it for good without a new lock.
Text us your address and a photo of the door. We get you back in and can make new keys from the lock. If you are not sure where the old keys ended up, we can rekey at the same visit so nobody else can use them.
